As summer winds down and children gear up for the new school year, there's a buzz of excitement as they anticipate advancing to the next grade, reuniting with friends, and making new acquaintances. However, this period can also bring unexpected risks. Ensuring the safety of our children is paramount. It's crucial to keep in mind – and to discuss with your children – some essential tips that will help keep them safe and healthy throughout the school year!

Here are the recommended steps by the National Association of Elementary School Principals to ensure a safe school experience.

  1. Familiarize Yourself with the School's Emergency Procedures

    • Schools often include emergency plans and important phone numbers in handbooks and post them in classrooms. Spend a few minutes reviewing this information with your child. Knowing these details can boost their confidence to act swiftly in case of an emergency.

  2. Know the Travel Routes to and from School

    • Make sure both you and your child are aware of the primary and alternate routes. In emergencies, some roads may be blocked, so having a backup plan is essential.

  3. Follow School Security and Safety Measures

    • Schools may require visitors to sign in, be escorted, or wear a visitor pass. Adhering to these rules sets a great example for your kids and helps maintain a secure environment.

  4. Discuss Safety with Your Child

    • Be specific about safety measures. Talk about trusting their instincts and recognizing fear. Explain what to do if they feel unsafe (e.g., find a teacher, call 911). Ensure they know how to contact you or a trusted neighbor.

  5. Keep School Staff Informed About Health and Emotional Concerns

    • If your child has a food allergy, physical disability, or any other health issue, inform their teachers and principal. Keeping the school updated ensures they can provide the necessary support.

  6. Get Involved in School Safety

    • Talk with the principal about ways to enhance school safety, like organizing a neighborhood watch or improving traffic safety during drop-off and pick-up times. Parent groups can make a significant impact.

A safe community for children means a safe community for everyone. As the school year kicks off, whether you're a student, parent, or responsible community member, these tips can help make the school year secure and enjoyable for all.

Stay safe, and let's make this school year the best one yet!
